Step onto the mat and into a world of fluid motion, rhythmic breath, and mindful movement. In this blog article, we invite you to explore the essence of Vinyasa yoga and discover the transformative power of our inspired classes, designed to awaken your body, calm your mind, and nourish your soul.

Origins of Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa Yoga was started in the early 20th century by one of the recognized “fathers” of modern yoga, Tirumalai Krishnamacharya (1888 – 1989). Krishnamacharya claims to have learned everything from a 5,000 year old document called the “Yoga Korunta”. The document was never found because, according to lore, it was consumed by ants.

The system of asanas (poses or postures) and vinyasas (transitions) that Krishnamacharya learned from the Yoga Korunta were taught to numerous students, the most noteworthy being a man named Krishna Pattabhi Jois.

After studying under Krishnamacharya for many years, Jois adapted the asanas and vinyasas he was taught into a style that incorporates synchronized breathing with flowing movements called Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga. This is the style of yoga that we most associate with Vinyasa or Flow Yoga today.

Dance of Breath and Movement

Vinyasa yoga, often referred to as “flow yoga,” is a dynamic practice that seamlessly synchronizes breath with movement. Rooted in the ancient teachings of Hatha yoga, Vinyasa invites practitioners to transition gracefully between poses, creating a moving meditation that promotes flexibility, strength, and inner peace.

In classical Hatha Yoga, we focus on holding static asanas for an extended period of time in order to align the body and mind. Vinyasa Yoga on the other hand involves smoothly transitioning between poses in a flowing sequence synchronized with the breath. Both styles incorporate fundamentals like proper alignment, concentration, and controlled breathing with the aim to connect the mind, body, and breath.

The benefits of Vinyasa yoga extend far beyond the physical realm. In addition to improving strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health, regular practice promotes mental clarity, reduces stress, and enhances overall well-being. By cultivating a deep connection between breath and movement, Move It Flow becomes a moving meditation that nourishes body, mind, and spirit.
